Sakura and Syaoran
The most important and cute relationship throughout the series is Sakura and Syaoran. The second half of the manga and the third series of the anime were dedicated to the couple as well as the converting of the Clow cards into Sakura cards. Not only are they are they one of the cutest anime couple around but they are also my favourite couple.
When they first met, they were not on the best of terms as Syaoran harassed and forced Sakura to hand over the Clow cards to him. As soon as they started to collect Clow cards together, they would work together to make it easier for them to capture the Clow cards and it was then that Syaoran started to respect her as Sakura would always cheer him up and would never give up. Syaoran is a pivotal character when it comes to capturing the Clow cards and without his support and help, Sakura would probably have not captured all of the cards. Both of them are very similar in personalities and are both kind and supportive. They both are slightly different in some respects making them very different and both likeable.
From the beginning, Sakura was very intimidated by Syaoran as he would constantly refer to her as being not worthy to be a Cardcaptor. Even when Syaoran would make her feel sad, she would always try her best no matter what the situation. Even after being degraded by Syaoran’s comments, Sakura still says thank you to him as his advice has been very helpful. One part of Sakura that Syaoran is always flattered by is her very heart-warming personality and friendliness. No matter what happens, Sakura is always happy and kind and since Syaoran has never seen this kind of behaviour, he starts to relax around her and becomes less aggressive. Even though at the beginning, Syaoran is very unfriendly and aggressive towards Sakura, she still tries her hardest to be friends with him.
Syaoran finally realises his feelings in the third series and tries his hardest to confess even though he is very unsuccessful. He will normally blush a lot if Sakura does something funny or he thinks is very pretty. Sakura is very clueless about Syaoran’s feelings and even Syaoran is slightly confused at first. Syaoran understands that Sakura loves Yukito and doesn’t want to interfere although he wishes for Sakura to be happy and smile. Sakura starts to call Li-kun by his first name, ‘Syaoran’ and in turn he calls her by her first name. When Sakura confesses to Yukito and is rejected, Syaoran is the first person to offer her support and comfort. He gives her all the advice he can give her and she eventually recovers. In order to repay him for the favour, she gives him a knitted scarf that she spent a whole night making.
Syaoran confesses to Sakura after she has defeated Eriol and has changed the last two remaining Clow cards into Sakura cards. The confession is quite a shock to her, as she wasn’t aware of Syaoran’s feelings. She starts to become confused about her own feelings and tells herself that Syaoran is a close friends and it didn’t feel the same as when she was in love with Yukito. In the manga, Sakura is so confused about her feelings after hearing that Syaoran is moving back to China that she consulted both Chiharu and Rika after they noticed that she was feeling upset. Slowly she starts to realise that in fact, Syaoran is her “one and only” and before Syaoran leaves to go back to China, she confesses her feelings to him.
In the manga, Sakura and Syaoran exchange teddy bears where each one is named after each other. This is a tradition in Japan where if you exchange teddy bears and you name the bear after the person that gave it to you, it is said that you will be together forever. Although in the anime, Syaoran gives Sakura a teddy bear which she names Syaoran but Sakura doesn’t give him a teddy bear in exchange. In the anime, Syaoran confesses his feelings to Sakura although she doesn’t have any time to tell him how she feels. Just before he leaves to go on to a plane, Syaoran gives her a teddy bear, which she names Syaoran. A couple of months later, Sakura and Syaoran meet each other again after feeling a strange presence and throughout the film, she tries to confess her feelings to him but is unsuccessful until the end of the film.
